WHAT WE DO

Spells Writing Lab is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that aims to develop the creative and expository writing abilities of school-age children and awaken a lifelong love of writing by providing free writing programs and teacher development opportunities throughout the greater Philadelphia area.

We believe that literacy is a cornerstone for future success, and that personalized attention and unconventional learning opportunities can inspire students to greater success, both in the classroom and in life. To achieve these goals, we offer drop-in tutoring, after-school and weekend writing workshops, in-school assistance with student publications, and professional development opportunities for teachers. All of our programs are free, and many incorporate other artistic disciplines such as music, film, or the visual arts to inspire young writers.

Founded in Spring 2009, Spells soon launched a series of writing workshops at donated spaces such as bookstores and non-profit organizations. After opening our North Philly center in January 2010, we began offering drop-in tutoring for neighborhood kids and additional workshops for young writers in our new home.
