Lori L. Tharps, writer, author, speaker, teacher, mother, and multicultural maven, is now also a member of our Advisory Board. A prolific scribe and thought-provoking voice, Lori’s written for Entertainment Weekly, Vibe, Ms., Savoy, Suede, Bitch, Odyssey Couleur and Essence magazines.
Lori is the author of the critically acclaimed Kinky Gazpacho, a memoir, a travel essay, and a love story that traces her journey from Milwaukee to the land of her future in-laws in the south of Spain. Her first book, Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America, charts the powerful journey of Black hair from 15th-century Africa to modern-day America. She also contributed an essay to Naked: Black Women Bare All about their Skin, Hair, Hips, Lips,and Other Parts about her changing relationship with her body through pregnancy, and she is currently at work on her first novel.
In her free time, Lori teaches magazine writing at Temple University and shares her thoughts with us on a regular basis through her blog, My American Melting Pot.
